The article in The Tribune about Congress not wanting to see Bush get credit for cutting the national debt hit the nail right on the head. When it comes to a choice between the solvency of the nation and their chance to lose a good election issue, the Dems in Congress don`t have to think twice.

Twenty-five cent levy on each $100 deposit to help bail out the savings and loans? Don`t make Congress laugh. National gasoline tax to reduce the debt? Negative. Bonus to departments that manage to save money? Our two Democratic senators aren`t remotely interested. Line-item veto so the president can okay needed bills but line out the political pork? Not a chance with Congress.

What is Congress interested in? Raiding the large Social Security surplus to finance spending projects to impress the folks back home. Oh, and doubling their own salaries.
