Perhaps the most important civic ”happening” in Chicago over the past 2 1/2 years has been progress made at the Chicago Park District. Accomplishments include:

– Implementation of a soft-surface playlot program that has resulted in the renovation of 100 playgrounds.

– Establishment of a local advisory council system that allows neighborhoods and the park district to work together to solve problems and meet community needs.

– Creation of the ”host park” management system, decentralizing administration and bringing it closer to the community.

We have seen a remarkable commitment by park district personnel. We do not want to ”turn back the clock.” Politics and patronage should never again rule the park system.
