Dick Clark and ”American Bandstand” have outlasted dozens of pretenders to the TV dance-show throne.
Most emerged in the mid-`60s at the height of Beatlemania. Most faded out within a few months. A moment of silence, please, for those third-rate
”Bandstands,” including:
– ”Shindig,” hosted by somebody named Jimmy O`Neill.
– ”Where the Action Is,” hosted by Paul Revere and the Raiders and Tina Mason.
– ”It`s Happening,” with Paul Revere and the Raiders again.
– ”The Music Scene,” hosted by-believe it or not-David Steinberg.
– ”Hullabaloo,” with a variety of guest hosts who probably prefer to remain anonymous.
– ”Shebang,” hosted by the pre-”American Top 40” Casey Kasem.
One TV dance show besides ”Bandstand” has survived and thrived, however. ”Soul Train” (10:30 a.m., WGN-Ch. 9), with Don Cornelius, has been on the air for 16 years.
