I find the example Exxon Corp. has set with its ad campaign in the print media disingenuous and, quite frankly, disgraceful.
To suggest that Exxon has moved either ”swiftly” or ”competently” is ludicrous. It is my understanding that the firm had no safeguards in place to deal with a catastrophic oil spill, thereby negating the ability to act swiftly. The ability to act competently is also in serious doubt due to the company`s questionable methods of screening key personnel, such as ships`
captains.
As it takes over two hours to cleanse a single sea otter of the Exxon crude oil he carries in his coat, ”several hundred people” hardly seems adequate.
I also question the absence of Mr. Rawl, the Exxon chairman, from the scene. He and his board members might consider lending a hand. It might convince them to spend their money on alleviating the situation as opposed to spending tens of thousands of dollars on insincere and deceptive letters to the public.
