Richie Daley has not yet been sworn in as mayor, but he is already costing the taxpayers of Cook County money. I refer to a 1990 special election to fill the vacancy in the state`s attorney`s office.

Daley was elected to serve a four-year term as state`s attorney last November. He misled the voters, allowing us to re-elect him to a four-year term when he apparently had no intention of serving even six months.

Now, to fill the state`s attorney vacancy, there will likely be a special election. News reports say it would be ”politically unpopular” to install a prosecutor for nearly the full term without voter participation.

I find it politically unpopular that my tax money will be wasted on a special election that could have been avoided had Daley been honest. However, I might find it a bit more politically popular if Daley offered to pay for the cost of the special election from his campaign contributions.
