I still can`t believe I read the following sentence in The Tribune:

”Like the president has a speechwriter, Notre Dame must have someone assigned to come up with the panic stat of the week for coach Lou Holtz.” I seriously expected the first clause to end up as, ”Like the president has a speechwriter, man.” I should think you would recruit a college graduate to write ”On college football,” or at least find one that hadn`t been a varsity lineman.

This comes as a particular shock after reading Steve Johnson`s fine article on Richard Lederer`s ”Crazy English” just 12 hours earlier. Even if the rest of society is infected with ”a kind of creeping illiteracy, both cultural and literate,” let The Tribune remain a refuge of higher grammatical standards, even in Sports. Such accomplished scribes as Bob Verdi and Jon Margolis are already leading the way.
