I get the impression that the Cubs-Giants playoff wasn`t so much a contest between two ball clubs as a war between San Francisco and Chicago newspaper columnists.

Unlike the columnists, I`ve lived in both cities. So allow me to set the record straight.

San Francisco is not as effete and wimpy a town as Chicagoans would imagine. And Chicago is much more sophisticated and worldly than San Franciscans would imagine.

The truth is, the two cities have a lot more in common than either would

(apparently) care to admit.
