The Chicago Filmmakers Social Science Fiction Festival has plenty of aliens, in more than one way. Not only will this three-week fest feature plenty of science fiction, but the selections, many by local filmmakers, will be quite foreign to most Earthlings. ”They`re films that don`t normally get shown at science-fiction festivals,” said William Easton, the time/arts coordinator. ”This is instead of the normal, Trekkie-type stuff.” The activities kick off at 7 p.m. Friday (Yes, they`re quite aware that it`s Friday the 13th!) with a tribute to ”kooks.” Donna Kossy has collected kook videos featuring obscure self-made films dealing with alien encounters. Other highlights over the next three weeks include readings by sci-fi writer Frederick Pohl and a panel discussion on UFOs. (Pictured here: ”The Cars That Ate Paris.”)
