Since World War II, Japan has been the economic miracle of the world.
Or has it? As a homogeneous group, the Japanese are without a doubt among the most resourceful and intelligent on this planet. Who could doubt that, without interference, they would rebuild their nation? However, let`s not forget that the remarkable revival of Japan took place without the economic burden of a national defense.
The U.S., to shield the world from future Japanese aggression, saw to it that Japan would not re-arm itself. The U.S. took upon itself the
responsibility for Japan`s defense. Japan`s economy, nurtured by years of an accommodating U.S. trade policy and no defense industry siphoning precious resources, emerged from the economic backwaters of the war a hungry giant. U.S.-Japan trade disagreements have become more acrimonious as of late, the result of a U.S. public awakening to the inequity of our relationship and a flexing of Japanese muscle.
Eventually, a ”we`ll show you” U.S. public policy will call for Japan to shoulder its own defense burden. What will be the result? A rebirth of the Japanese defense industry supported by the strongest economy in the world with the most advanced technology in the world. If we`re having trouble dealing with the Japanese now, wait until they`re fully armed.
