By consistently referring to retirees against the catastrophic plan as the ”ungrateful affluent” and the ”greedy wealthy,” backers of the plan hope to discredit the dissenters. Attempts at portraying retirees as gray-haired Kens and Barbies frolicking at resorts might be laughable if the motives weren`t so sinister.
This is an old tactic used to divert attention from basic issues and to pit one group-in this case the working taxpayers-against another. Stephen Chapman`s column ”Catastrophic care and the fleecing of the young” is another example of this division campaign.
I hope no one is taken in by this ruse and that they listen to what the seniors have been trying to say. The catastrophic coverage act was nothing more than a means of drumming up additional revenues and cleverly disguised as a ”supplemental premium.”
