This statement appeared in the Oct. 14 issue of The Tribune in the front- page article headlined ”Chicago selects new school boss.”

”School officials have said that they sought a black for the Chicago job, since more than 60 percent of the students enrolled in the city school system are black.”

Could it actually have happened that American Indians, Hispanics, Asians and ”whites” were arbitrarily excluded from consideration because they did not meet the racial test? If that transpired, has a double standard been established? If 60 percent of the students were ”white,” would it have been acceptable for the school board to have considered only ”white” candidates?

All this runs contrary to The Tribune`s often-stated editorial position in favor of equal employment opportunity. If the quoted statement represents fact, should The Tribune, with consistency, be very much opposed?
