Fifty-six students walked out of Harper High School Thursday morning to protest the daily security checks at the school entrance, 6520 S. Wood St., a Board of Education spokesman said.
Uniformed police have been frisking students and scanning them with hand- held metal detectors since Monday. A student was fatally stabbed in a Harper classroom Oct. 11.
Board of Education spokesman Ken Masson said students are scanned or patted down only if the officer on duty has ”probable cause” to believe they are carrying weapons and drugs. He said the security checks would continue Friday and would be performed on a random basis beginning Monday.
