The Cook County Forest Preserve District is selling 25 acres of forest to the private Riverside Golf Club in North Riverside for $1 million for the expansion of its golf course.
While the district will be richer, the people of Cook County will lose a lot. This forest is a flood plain for the dangerous Des Plaines River, an open wildlife area, a bird sanctuary, a place for a quiet walk with nature at its finest.
I cannot recall the district ever selling land; other districts keep adding to their holdings. Isn`t the mission of the district to purchase and keep open areas for the benefit of all?
