The Tribune`s Dec. 28 editorial, in its dread of principled debate on abortion, misrepresents the results of its own poll.
The editorial claims that the candidates for the top offices in Illinois occupy ”the same sensible middle ground” on abortion as ”the bulk of the voters.” The poll showed that voters are opposed to abortions done for economic or personal convenience. But such abortions-which account for more than nine-tenths of all abortions-would be permitted by the ”pro-choice”
candidates cited in the editorial.
The editorial is half right. The people are ”on the side of reason and moderation”-they want to sharply curb the wanton slaughter of unborn children.
