Have we outsmarted ourselves? It would certainly seem so, after reading Joan Beck`s column on medical costs, in which she quotes the conclusions of medical ethicist Daniel Callahan. He is a wise man: Costs have indeed escalated; patients ”oversue”; and doctors, as a result, overtest and operate too frequently.

With all the advanced technology in medicine, we are regressing rather than progressing.
