Management negotiator Charles O`Connor said Wednesday he was not surprised by reports of ”unity” emanating from a baseball players` union meeting held Tuesday in Phoenix.
”We always expect that kind of thing,” O`Connor said during a telephone interview. ”Any union, at this stage of negotiations, is always able to get a strike vote.”
O`Connor indicated he was ready to resume negotiations, most likely on Monday, with Don Fehr, the union`s exeutive director. Fehr, who presided at the Phoenix meeting, was in Los Angeles Wednesday and will be in Florida Thursday to continue his sequence of regional player meetings.
”We`re waiting for their call,” said O`Connor. ”We`ll be ready to talk when they are.”
The owners have two meetings planned next week, both in Dallas: the Players Relations Committee on Wednesday, followed the next day by a full meeting of the 26 club owners.
