The attendance figures for the Virginia Slims women`s tennis tournament were lower by one person, myself, than they would have been if ”Virginia Slims” were not in the tournament`s title.
I am not an anti-tobacco ”radical,” but I consciously did not attend this tournament as a personal stand against the tobacco industry`s attempt to find acceptance through sponsorship of such events. As the secretary of health and human services, Dr. Louis Sullivan, has publicly protested such sponsorship, I have privately protested it as a consumer.
Perhaps the Virginia Slims tournament organizers fail to recognize that there are supporters of women`s tennis who do not support Virginia Slims cigarettes.
