Thirty years ago the prospect of not having major league baseball in the summer would have been more than slightly disconcerting. Now, those of us who enjoy spectator sports have a wide variety of reasonable substitutes. The basketball and hockey seasons go practically into the summer. The football season starts a month or two later and tennis and other sports have become much more enjoyable on a spectator level in the last 15 years.

Although baseball is still a great American institution, both the players and owners should realize that they no longer have the corner on America`s summer sports spectator fun.
