There`s a new kind of adventurer taking to the oceans. Once the preserve of the spear-carrying underwater warrior, diving now has become a favored activity for photographers, environmentalists and just plain sightseers.

And more women are taking the scuba-diving plunge, says American Health magazine.

”Women are inherently better divers than men, one reason I think they are taking to the sport in increasing numbers,” Bob Weisman, a scuba instructor in Kona, Hawaii, says in the magazine`s current issue.

”Diving is a sport to be shared and savored, but men approach it as a competitive situation. Women know how to accept the challenge of being underwater without ego and adapt much better to the marine environment,”

Weisman says. ”They seem to intuitively understand its complexity and its beauty.”

About 500,000 Americans will don scuba gear and head for aquatic destinations this year, the magazine says.
