– Barrington 17-9, Elgin 7-10-Barrington (6-3) breezed in the opener with Chad Slaveley going 5 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Jason Schumaker whacking a home run. Matt Kraus was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Slaveley was 3 for 4 with a triple, homer and two RBIs in the nightcap won by Elgin.

– Thornwood 17-1, Marist 7-3-Stout hitting by Dave McNally (4 for 4, HR, four RBIs), Craig Gronowski (HR, three RBIs), Ken Howes (3 for 3, HR, three RBIs), Lloyd Richards (three RBIs), Ed Young (HR, two RBIs) and Clifford Floyd (HR)

paced a 19-hit attack by Thornwood (1-1) in the opener. Jim Shanahan`s two-run fourth-inning homer in the nightcap gave Marist a split.

– Simeon Pre-season Tournament-Lane Tech swept all three of its five-inning games in the one-day round-robin meet, beating Chicago Vocational 8-0, Simeon 6-5 and Morgan Park 8-0. Rich Camilla (six hits, eight RBIs), John Bukraba

(seven RBIs) and Pedro Rodriguez (five hits) led the Indians` offense. Simeon (6-1) won two of three, the loss coming to Lane on a bases-loaded balk. Craig Hawkins and Shawn Livsey belted two-run homers for the Wolverines in a 14-7 win over Clemente.

– C.L. Central 14-13, Sycamore 8-2-Chad Zambon (three hits, four RBIs) and Dave Phillips (two hits, three RBIs) led the way in the opener. Mike Silk

(2-0) hurled a complete-game four-hitter, Don Myers drilled a two-run homer and Chris Berdgahl was 2 for 3 with three RBIs in the nightcap as unbeaten Crystal Lake Central soared to 8-0.

– Loyola 6-2, Glenbrook South 2-4-Loyola (7-1) won the first game in eight innings as Tom Ratcliffe stole home with the lead run and Brian Doherty followed with a three-run double. In the second game, Loyola`s first loss of the season, Glenbrook`s two-run fourth inning was the difference.

– Maine East 4-4, Niles North 2-1-Len LaBonar`s seventh-inning triple gave Maine East (4-6) the win in Game 1, and John Allegretti had two hits and two RBIs for Maine in Game 2. Bob Hixson and Bernard Lee were the winning pitchers; both had four-hitters.

– Andrew 11-4, Oak Forest 2-10-The two south suburban powers split as Brian Cummins struck out 14 to win Game 1 for Andrew (3-1). Andrew had three homers in the first game-by Chris Delaney, John Wear and Al Howard. In Game 2, John Elisson, who was 6 for 8 on the day, had a three-run homer for Oak Forest

(3-1). Rich Graziano added a two-run homer.

– Oak Lawn 11-10, Evergreen Park 10-1-John Watt had six hits and three RBIs in the two games to lead Oak Lawn (4-4) to the sweep.

– Sandburg 12-20, Romeoville 11-5-Scott Barnes (six hits, two triples, two doubles, six RBIs) and Jason Scarpelli (four hits, three doubles, HR, five RBIs) led the way as unbeaten Sandburg (4-0) swept Romeoville. Joe Lewandowski had a homer and five RBIs, and Brian Tencza had three hits, a homer and four RBIs in Game 2.

– Lincoln-Way 7-10, Bremen 5-0-Chad Leidolph (five-hitter, 10 strikeouts) and Joel Dzarnowski (two hits, HR, two RBIs) led the way in the opener, and Ron Gabrisko (no-hitter, eight strikeouts) and Dzarnowski (three-run double) took charge in the second game for Lincoln-Way (2-1).

– Lockport 13-7, Naperville North 3-4-Jim Batusich had five hits and four RBIs in the two games as Lockport (2-2) swept Naperville (4-2). Lockport had 10 runs in the first inning of the first game to make a winner of pitcher Jeff Kojder.

– Bolingbrook 3-10, Minooka 2-9-Derek Begich doubled to knock in the winning run for Bolingbrook (3-2) in the first game, and Mike Knoll had a solo homer, a triple and three RBIs for Bolingbrook in Game 2.

– Homewood-Flossmoor 5-7, Joliet Central 1-6-H-F (2-0) was paced by the hitting of Marc Willard (5 for 6 for the day, four RBIs, homer, three runs scored and the game-winning RBI in Game 2) and Dennis Endres (5 for 8, one RBI, one run scored).

– Evanston 12-3, Notre Dame 2-0-Paul King (four-hitter), Albert Barnum (3 for 4, two RBIs) and Sloan Smith (two-run HR, four RBIs) led the first-game victory. Justin Scheehy (2-0) hurled a two-hitter and King had a run-scoring single in a two-run first inning in the nightcap as Evanston (4-0) swept Notre Dame.

– Rolling Meadows 9-13, Jacobs 2-3-Chris Cosman (two-hitter in the opener)

and Don Spaniak (6 for 6, two doubles, HR, five RBIs on the day) and Ryan Giusti (three hits, two HRs, three RBIs on the day) powered Rolling Meadows

(4-0).

SOFTBALL

– Maine East tournament-Maine East coach Bob Mueller put some hitting back into fast-pitch softball Saturday with a modified pitching tournament. The tournament, which limits pitchers to one forward step, no steps backward and no windmill motion, was designed to promote a little more hitting in a game that usually is dominated by pitchers.

Maine East was the only team to go undefeated in the tournament, beating Niles North 20-8 and Glenbrook South 22-8. Highland Park beat Niles North 20-18 and Glenbrook South beat Highland Park 13-12 in the other two games.

– Thornton Fractional South 4-3, Thornton 2-2-Thornton`s Candy Wiedeman faced 73 batters in 17 innings, struck out 23 and allowed only one earned run, but took both losses. Amy Brewe gave up five hits in 11 innings to win the opener, and Shay Wilson gave up only one hit in seven innings in the second.

– Luther East 15-20, Walther Lutheran 4-7-Susan Gleim (3-0) hurled a three-hitter, and Michelle Gleim was 3 for 3 and scored three runs in Game 1. Winning pitcher Shane Benne (1-1) had a three-run homer, and Michelle Gleim was 3 for 5 with two RBIs in Game 2 for Luther East (4-1).

– Larkin 12-6, Dundee-Crown 6-3-Larkin (3-1) swept Dundee-Crown (0-3) behind Amber Wenzel, who pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight in the nightcap and was 5 for 6 with five runs scored and three RBIs for the day.

– Maine South 8-12, Hoffman Estates 4-2-Laura Potter (two hits, three RBIs)

and Jane Steffen (three hits) backed Kim Wiederer`s (2-0) two-hitter in Game 1, and Margaret Zimmerman drove in two runs with three hits in Game 2 for Maine South (3-0).

– Zion-Benton 8-11, Schaumburg 0-5-Vicky Plumley and Holly Morris each had two hits, and Heidi Rhodes had a two-run double in Game 1, and Jessica Conti was 3 for 5 and stole four bases in Game 2 for Zion-Benton (3-0).

– Thornwood 4-2, Morton 0-1-No. 1 Thornwood (2-0) opened its season with a sweep. Tina Zuccolo tossed a one-hitter, striking out 14 and walking nobody in the first game, and winning pitcher Michelle Venturella (six innings, one-hitter) tripled in one run and scored the second on a suicide squeeze bunt by Kristen Paarlberg driving in a two-run third inning. Zuccolo got the save in the nightcap.

– Marian Catholic 5-7, Mother McAuley 1-4-Chris Cullen pitched a three-hitter in Game 1 to pace Marian (3-0), and Julie Klein had three hits and three RBIs to pace the second-game triumph. Kathryn Gleason had two hits and three RBIs in Game 1.

– Hillcrest 11-4, Oak Lawn 0-1-Hillcrest (6-1) swept both ends of the double- header with junior right-hander Dawn Stahlak pitching all 12 innings. Stahlak tossed a five-inning one-hitter, struck out 11 in Game 1 and spaced three hits, struck out 14 and walked three over seven innings in the nightcap. Miko Chambers was 3 for 3 with a grand slam and five RBIs in Game 1.

– Reed-Custer 9-14, Gardner 0-4-Missy Nowak (one-hitter, 11 strikeouts), Stefanie Wren (two hits, bases-loaded triple), Lucy Hernandez (three hits, two runs scored) and Jamie Eller (two-run triple) paced Reed-Custer (2-1) in the opener. Wren tossed a three-hitter, Renee Campbell drove in four runs, Hernandez had three hits and Wren two in the nightcap.

– Stagg 3-12, Bremen 0-2-Heidi Neal pitched a one-hitter and struck out 11 in the opener. Wendi Koss and Jenny Wiencek each drove in two runs as Stagg (2-1) completed the sweep.

– Westmont 9-21, Elmwood Park 1-0-Robin Reed homered twice, one a grand slam, and had seven RBIs in the opener. Westmont (3-0) completed the Northeast Conference sweep behind Kristy Walter`s five RBIs.

GIRLS SOCCER

– Barrington tournament-Amy Derry, Heather Maier and Amy Moore scored the goals, and goaltender Melissa Mott recorded the shutout as Rockford Boylan blanked host Barrington 3-0 to complete a three-game sweep of the round-robin meet.

– Stevenson 6, Mundelein 0-Stevenson (1-0, 1-0) breezed in its North Suburban opener behind Diane Ford (two goals) and Lisa Desimon (one goal, two assists). Mundelein fell to 0-2, 0-2.

– Maine West 5, Glenbard North 1-Cristy Nelson and Deborah Zonavetch scored two goals apiece to lift Maine West (1-1).

– McAuley 3, York 1-Freshman center forward Kathy Fitzpatrick scored all three goals, raising her total to 28 in five games, as Mother McAuley (2-2-1) rolled.

– Shepard 7, Queen of Peace 1-Lisa Widuck had three goals and two assists to pace unbeaten Shepard (3-0).

– Lincoln-Way 5, Rich South 0-Sophomore goaltender Jessica Prokop had 12 saves en route to her third straight shutout, and Colleen Kennedy and Amy Zander had two goals apiece to spark Lincoln-Way (3-0).

– Homewood-Flossmoor 4, Argo 0-Shannon Flanagan had two goals, Mari McLinden and Danielle Dominy one apiece to pace Homewood-Flossmoor (1-2). Goaltender Jean Harrison had four saves en route to the shutout.

– Romeoville Tournament-Lisa Oswalt and Sara Baez each had a goal and an assist, and goaltender Cheryl Witkiewicz had six saves en route to her third straight shutout as host Romeoville (3-1-1) beat 3-1 Stagg 2-0 to win its own tournament with a sweep of three games.
