The United States has never recognized or acknowledged the validity of the Soviet Union`s annexation of the Baltic states. Yet whenever there is a story from within those three states, our newspapers, including the Tribune, never fail to dateline it ”Vilnius, USSR,” ”Riga, USSR,” etc. Why can`t we simply call it as it is, ”Vilnius, Lithuania,” ”Riga, Latvia,” etc., and remove even this (slightest) semblance of the Soviets` false premise?
