In the March 27 Tribune there were two related stories. A front-page story told how Soviet paratroopers stormed a hospital and captured two dozen Lithuanians who had sought refuge. The young men were beaten by the paratroopers and a ”trail of blood led down the steps and out the front door of the hospital.”

On an inside page we read that the ”U.S. puts Lithuania in diplomatic limbo.” The story quoted a diplomat of the United States as saying, ”You realize the game we are all playing. We`re playing at not adding further to the burdens of Mikhail Gorbachev.”

It seems that the wrong game is being played if we are so concerned about the burdens on Gorbachev that we forget the burdens on an entire country. Let`s forget the game-playing and get down to reality and respectability. Let`s take a proper stand.
