”OH MY GAWD! OH MY GAWD! OH MY GAWD! HIS FACE WAS NEXT TO MY FACE! WE LOVE YOU MUCH, TOMMY PAGE!”
Geez, with all the hoopla, you`d think the Beatles had come together again.
Instead, some 3,000 13-to-16-year-old girls, hysterically weepy, waited in line for hours seeking an autograph-even a kiss-from Page, one of the newest singing pop idols. He appeared recently at the State Street store of Marshall Field & Co. to celebrate the opening of its renovated juniors`
department.
Page`s hit single, ”I`ll Be Your Everything,” was No. 1 on Billboard`s pop record chart, and he recently completed a 51-city tour as the opening act for New Kids on the Block.
The event, co-sponsored by B-96 FM, caught Fields` staff-and unsuspecting shoppers-by surprise. Page, 20, was deluged with waves of girls-300 every five minutes-toting bouquets of roses, mini-shopping bags filled with personal letters, balloons, teddy bears and homemade ”I Love You, Tommy Page” signs. ”We expected maybe a couple of hundred, not nearly this many,” said Laura Sandall, public relations manager at Field`s.
While TV monitors played interviews with Page and his music videos, the singer autographed posters-and even fans` clothing.
Asked why she was trembling and sobbing after receiving her signed poster, a 14-year-old gushed: ”Because he`s so gorgeous and he`s got the sweetest face.” His features are reminiscent of Elvis-including the signature forelock falling over his face. Laurens Grant
