The Metra controversy over smoking on trains can have a rather simple and mutually profitable solution: Designate the half-car next to the locomotive as the permanent smoker. Sell special tickets, single, RT, 10-ride or monthly-at triple the regular price.

Out of the extra revenue install extra special ventilation equipment and employ a special ”admissions” conductor for the door to the smoker.

Metra could probably install a few amenities to serve the nicotine brigade, such as a cigarette machine, fancy ashtrays and special seatcover material that is immune to lighted cigarettes and ashes.
