Gerry Staley goes 4 innings of shutout relief to win opener, and Frank Baumann replaces Dick Donovan in the 1st inning of Game 2 and pitches 8 1/3 innings of shutout ball for the win. Sox are 7-4, in 1st, 1 game ahead.

– 1970-Phil Niekro pitches a 3-hitter, Henry Aaron homers and Felix Millan delivers an RBI double in a 2-run 1st inning and the Braves go on to beat the Cubs and rookie Joe Decker 3-2 in Atlanta. Decker (7 innings, 3 hits allowed) hits his 1st major-league homer, and Billy Williams hits his 8th of the year. Cubs are 13-6, in NL East lead, 2 1/2 games ahead of Pittsburgh.
