I was angered by the article ”Minority artists blast city exhibit” in the Tribune recently. I feel it is a shame that Continental Bank felt it had to cut its financial support because the Alliance for Cultural Equity was unsatisfied with minority selection.
In a time when the question of censorship in art is so prevalent, I find it appalling that any group shoud try to steer a jury for which quality must be the only criterion. I feel it would be discriminatory for that jury to
”balance” the ratio of artists simply on the basis of race.
As a white, male artist I am often angered when I see shows for black, women or minority artists only advertised, because I know that if a ”white, male artist show” were ever advertised, there would be screams of racism. Art should not be about race or gender but rather about expression and quality.
