A resolution to create a joint Illinois Senate-House commission to study what is needed to provide adequate training for part-time and auxiliary police officers has been approved by the Senate`s Executive Committee.
The resolution now goes to the floor of the Senate, where further action is expected within two weeks, said Sen. Judy Baar Topinka (R-Riverside), the measure`s sponsor.
The proposal calls for the 11-member commission to be comprised of two members each from the House and Senate, and seven others from various law enforcement agencies in the state. The heavy use of part-time police officers, particularly outside Chicago, prompted Topinka`s resolution.
