Not since the mid-`60s, when Diana Ross & Co. reigned supreme, has the
”girl group” been such a force in pop music. Back then, such ensembles as the Crystals and the Chiffons cranked out a seemingly unending stream of hit singles that were dismissed as teenage fluff but which since have attained rock-classic status.
Only time will tell if today`s crop of ”girl groups”-led by Expose and closely followed by such wanna-bes as the Cover Girls and Seduction-will achieve a like place in pop history. But among the more talented of this new breed is the trio Sweet Sensation, whose current claim to fame is a sizzling, Latin-flavored remake of the Supremes` ”Love Child.”
Unfortunately, not much else on the group`s new LP has as much flash, though there are a couple of appealing ballads (”He`ll Never Know,” ”If Wishes Came True”) and the standard hip-hop fare (”Pleasure and Pain,”
”Bring It Back”). ”Love Child” isn`t a bad album. It`s just not going to set Sweet Sensation apart from an ever-growing crowd.
