Ms. O`Toole`s recent comments of the Bolingbrook 16 are symptomatic of the problem facing schools and educators today: the encouragement of irresponsible behavior.
The school board and administrators of Bolingbrook should be commended for taking a stand against truancy, even for White Sox opening day. It is unfortunate that adults, particularly parents and ”learned” attorneys, believe students should not have to face consequencees for their actions. Life entails many responsibilities. People need to learn at a young age that the personal pursuit of pleasure can have negative repercussions.
If education in this country is to improve, students must become committed to learn and achieve. A recent survey that indicated that American students spend over 20 hours a week watching TV, and less than five hours on homework says much about our misplaced values and lack of responsible behavior.
