In its editorial of May 12 the Tribune supports Mr. Bush`s decision to grant the Soviet Union ”most-favored-nation” status at a time when it has imposed an embargo on Lithuania.

Mr. Bush and the Tribune may believe that U.S.-Soviet trade is more important than the Baltic countries` right to self-determination. But is it not hypocritical to claim that this decision does not constitute ”turning his (Mr. Bush`s) back on Lithuania” as the Tribune did in the editorial?

Surely, both Mr. Bush and the Tribune must realize that the decision severely undermines the Baltic countries` efforts to re-establish their independence.

If you choose your trade over another`s liberty, you should not pretend to be supporting both!
