John Husar writes that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ”wants to get rid of Rend Lake” and turn over the lands at its other reservoirs to states or private developers.
His account is not consistent with the direction or purpose of the Corps` Recreation Task Force.
We are midway through a year-long study to find ways to maintain and enhance our recreation program while reducing federal expenditures. It is not a divestiture study.
Our report will incorporate suggestions from a poll of the 50 governors, telephone surveys, detailed interviews, six workshops held across the nation and many individual letters.
Two messages have been heard repeatedly: (1) Protect the natural resources, and (2) don`t sell the public lands. These and other comments will receive full consideration.
We will not be closing recreation areas or deferring maintenance as a result of this study. Your readers can continue to look forward to a quality outdoor experience at our campgrounds and other recreation facilities at the Corps` water resources projects.
