Mike Royko`s column of May 31 about the voter who wanted to express his concern about the savings and loan crisis but didn`t know his congressman`s name is revealing.
It is logical to blame the Reagan/Bush administration for its policy of financial deregulation and the Congress for going along with it, but there is a third force equally culpable: the American voter.
Reagan announced publicly that he intended to ”get the government off the back of American business.” Apparently the American voter bought this concept. Result: the most costly debacle in our history.
In 1980 the American voter bought the concept of a reduction in taxes but also voted for a U.S. House dominated by the other party in order to keep the entitlements and services flowing. Result: the largest deficit in our history. There is enough blame to be shared for the financial situation in which we find ourselves, so let`s not except the American voter.
