Back when first-class postage cost five cents, one expected and received reasonably prompt delivery.

Recently, two very important letters arrived from downtown (1 1/2 miles away). One took five days, the other six. I used to walk the distance in 30 minutes.

I shudder to think what the delivery time will be when the rate goes up to 30 cents.
