In response to Joan Beck`s excellent column of June 14 on bilingual education:
I came to the United States in 1938 as a 9-year-old, speaking only a few words of English. I attended school in New Jersey, later transferring to Pennsylvania and New York, where I was placed in regular grammar school classes where only English was spoken.
It was not long till I could speak English well enough to understand and be understood. Perhaps there is a lesson to be learned from earlier immigrants who became immersed in this country`s language, and became successful.
