Gunshots fired in the dark,
though as common in the light
As I look out my back window,
I see nothing but despair
All I see is darkness beyond
my window sill
All I hear is screaming, crying,
sirens in the night
They are babies having babies,
the girls I jumped rope with.
Dopers and the dealers, running
drugs where they used to run
bases
Peaches, Nini, and Eric
my childhood pals
Though we grew up together,
we went our separate ways.
For when I get discouraged,
I have somewhere else to turn.
I look out my front window and
in my future I behold
Colored lights reflecting off
the river as brightness fills the air
Red, yellow, blue and orange
colors of the sunrise
For like the sun does rise,
so do my hopes
And as the river flows through
my neighborhood, I, too, know
I must move on.
For out there are my dreams,
my goals
It might have been easier to
go the other way
But I looked out my front window
and my heart filled with joy.
