As a former Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines, I was disheartened to learn that the current volunteers in that country were pulled out of their posts, but I am not surprised.
During my stay in the Philippines from 1983 to 1985, signs of political unrest and a growing insurgency were very apparent. Skirmishes between the New People`s Army and the Philippine military were a daily occurrence.
Today, many people assume that the turmoil is over now that Cory Aquino is president. But in reality, things are still the same, if not worse.
