Petar Soljak`s recent letter ”Reaching for democracy in Yugoslavia”
states that Yugoslavia can survive as a state. In truth, Yugoslavia is dead politically. However, for those misguided people like Petar Soljak, old habits are hard to break.
Nationalistic/secessionist governments have won in the Republics of Slovenia and Croatia. These people are not stupid; they will declare independence regardless of what Belgrade and people like Petar Soljak think. In the other republics, Macedonia and Bosnia-Hercegovina, the Communists are losing to secessionist/nationalistic parties.
So the question remains, ”Can Yugoslavia survive?” Yes, in history books. As a state, Yugoslavia`s inevitable breakup will happen within the next year.
