A brief look at the Bears` starting quarterback competition:

– Mike Tomczak-Maintaining his reputation as an excellent practice quarterback, Tomczak displayed his patented long-range passing touch by lofting TD passes to rookies Quintin Smith of Kansas and Chris Roscoe of Hawaii during Wednesday`s scrimmages. Finding the range consistently on shorter pass routes has been a problem for Tomczak, however, and a major cause for interceptions over the past few seasons.

– Jim Harbaugh-Picking up secondary receivers has been a concern of the fourth-year man from Michigan, and Wednesday Harbaugh adroitly found tight ends Jim Thornton and Steve Fumi over the middle on check-off patterns. Harbaugh is stressing staying in the pocket longer to survey the field instead of prematurely heading upfield on a run as he was wont to do last year.
