Cleveland Cavaliers free-agent forward John Williams does not yet have an offer sheet from the Miami Heat, according to his agent, Mark Bartelstein.
But he may get one soon.
”We have been talking to Miami and some other teams,” Bartelstein said. ”I think we can get an offer sheet this week, but nothing has been signed.”
The National reported that Miami has given Williams a seven-year, $28 million offer sheet.
”That is out of line and irresponsible,” Bartelstein said. ”We are not at that stage, yet. No offer sheet has been signed.”
But sources in Miami say that the Heat appears ready to make Williams an offer.
One source said that the seven-year, $28 million figure is close, but that the seventh year is a nonguaranteed option worth at least $6 million.
In other words, it would be a guaranteed six-year deal worth about $3.5 million annually, and much of that is supposed to be in deferred payments.
At the moment, all this money talk is pure speculation.
Cavs GM Wayne Embry said: ”I haven`t received any word that John has an offer. I can`t say what Miami will do because they`re the ones doing it or not doing something, not us.”
Regardless of the value of the offer sheet, the Cavs are expected to match it and retain the services of the 6-foot-11-inch forward.
