It will probably be impossible for singer-songwriter Jill Sobule to escape the comparisons that new artists are always forced to suffer. Even Todd Rundgren, the producer of her debut album, gets into the act, calling her ”a Joni Mitchell for the `90s.” With her adult-oriented, sophisticated songs, intimate vocals and distinctive nylon-string guitar playing, Sobule doesn`t really need any comparisons-no matter how well-intentioned. Rock-tinged songs like ”Disinformation” and ”Living Color” are the immediate grabbers, while ”Life Goes On Without You” and ”The Gifted Child” wouldn`t sound out of place in a cabaret. It`s when she blends both styles on ”Golden Cage,”
though, that Sobule`s special gift shines in its best light.
