Author Bell Hooks will be the keynote speaker at the second annual Peoria Area Women Against Racism Conference next weekend. Hooks is best-known for her book, ”Ain`t I A Woman: Black Women and Feminism,” (South End Press, $20). She currently teaches at Oberlin College.
The conference also includes workshops for men, women and children, a panel discussion on institutional racism called ”Building Coalitions,” and an original play performed by Chicagoan Joan McCarthy and a troupe of Chicago actors.
The theme of this year`s two-day meeting, Sept. 7 and 8 at Bradley University, Peoria, is ”Unlearning Racism. Sponsors include Bradley University Women`s Studies, the Pekin Coalition for Equality, the YWCA and National Organization for Women, among other groups.
