I was greatly disappointed in your editorial ”Globe-trotting with the governor.”
I was a delegate on the mission to Poland, Hungary and Russia, and I am astounded at the short-sightedness you expressed. In farming it may be called seed money and in business perhaps research and development, but every endeavor must have a foundation from which to build.
This first step was extremely successful. We established a trade office in Warsaw and Budapest and signed a ”sister state” agreement with Russia. Our governor worked very diligently and skillfully to accomplish these feats. The countries could be a new frontier for Illinois business.
As to spending the taxpayers` money, most of the delegates, including my wife and I, paid for the entire trip with our personal funds.
Regardless of the short-term rhetoric, the longtime winner will be the State of Illinois.
