As a federal civil servant, I am currently facing the possibility of a 22-day so-called ”furlough” from employment in an effort to reduce the deficit to comply with Gramm-Rudman. This will result in a loss of gross income to me of over $2,000.
Would the general public agree to a one-time tax increase of $2,000 per person to help balance the budget? Hah! We`d have a lot of unemployed legislators if they tried to impose such a hardship.
I hope these same legislators are simply posturing and can find a more intelligent solution to a long-standing problem.
