With the situation in the Middle East threatening our supply of oil, would it not be prudent to undertake extensive research in the use of methane, ethanol or liquid hydrogen as fuel for automobiles, trucks, airplanes and other vehicles? Mercedes Benz, companies in Japan and, I believe, General Motors have been experimenting with alternative fuels. We should venture into a vigorous research and development program now; surely petroleum will be in very short supply 30 years from now.

Prices in Europe for a gallon of gasoline are $3.25 to $3.50-far above ours. The state of our economy demands a crash program to divert demand from oil and to develop other sources of energy.
