The ace of the staff usually starts on Opening Day. So it`s fitting that through a coincidence Jack McDowell will start Comiskey Park`s last game Sept. 30.

”I`m excited about it,” said McDowell, whose 13 victories are tied with Melido Perez and Greg Hibbard for most on the club. ”I just found out last week when they were setting up the rotation.”

He has experience in closing down old ballparks. He was the last Birmingham Baron to start in Rickwood Field, which the Sox`s Double-A club abandoned after the 1987 season.

McDowell doesn`t have any great plans to close out Comiskey against Seattle. ”Maybe I`ll go after my first shutout,” he said.
