The Carpentersville Village Board is considering banning leaf burning after a resident who said she was severely asthmatic contended that smoke from smoldering piles of leaves is threatening her life.
”I`m a prisoner in my own home,” said Carol Hannig, who asked board members to rescind the existing ordinance that allows burning between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. during the fall. She says the village does not enforce the hours.
Village Trustee Ken Hebel said the problem has become worse since the state banned dumping of leaves and grass in landfills. He urged police to enforce the existing law until the board can make a decision on whether to ban fires next month.
