From what I see on the local highways, it would appear that most drivers don`t care at all that gas costs $1.50 or more a gallon. I don`t see any sign of a voluntary slowdown to conserve gas, and I wonder what price, if any, could command a 55/65 m.p.h. speed on the part of most drivers.
I don`t really want to know, but I`m afraid we are all about to find out. If most people don`t care about the cost of gas, then why do we have troops in Saudi Arabia? It seems to me to be cruel and thoughtless to waste gas while young men and women are putting their lives at risk to save us a few cents per gallon.
I`m not saying that we should go back to mandatory 55 m.p.h. speed limits, but can`t we do something to save gas voluntarily? How about newspapers, radio and TV companies sponsoring energy-conservation programs aimed at the present crisis?
