– Burlington Central 10, Immaculate Conception 7-Ben Moore isn`t Burlington Central`s featured running back and he doesn`t possess great speed. In fact, he spends most of his time blocking for halfback John Rutkowski.

But it was Moore in the spotlight after he broke an 81-yard touchdown run to give Burlington the victory over IC (6-4).

With Burlington (8-2) leading 3-0 after a first half dominated by the defenses, Moore took the Rockets` first official play from scrimmage in the third, burst through a gaping hole created by his offensive line and zig-zagged his way into the end zone to give the Rockets a 10-0 lead they never relinquished.

”I knew I wasn`t going to outrun them,” Moore said, ”so I tried to keep them guessing by working back and forth. It was a beautiful hole. The linemen blocked great and I didn`t even get touched.”

Moore finished with 102 yards on eight carries while Rutkowski gained 54 on 15 carries.

Craig Stephens booted a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter and after Moore`s run the Burlington defense held on until Tony Mondragon scored from seven yards outs to cut into the lead early in the fourth. Again the defense tightened and Immaculate Conception`s final drive stalled.

”We knew that they were bigger than us and we knew they were probably a little stronger,” Burlington coach Gary Stran said. ”But we have good skill people and good speed on defense and we wanted to give those kids a chance to get to the ball, which we were able to do.”
