The Field Museum of Natural History will unveil a major new exhibit titled ”Pacific Spirits: Life, Death and the Supernatural” on Nov. 10. It features masks, sculptures, ornaments and musical instruments used as objects of ceremony, ritual and war by the island cultures of Melanesia and Polynesia in the South Pacific.
”Pacific Spirits” is a companion to ”Traveling the Pacific,” which opened last year. The two permanent exhibits are part of the museum`s $4.2 million Pacific project. It draws on 55,000 artifacts, including irreplaceable objects collected in the early 1900s.
