In Douglas E. Kneeland`s column, ”Minorities are no longer minor concern” (Oct. 25), he attempts to explain why the Tribune as well as other major newspapers handled the obituaries of Sammy Davis Jr. and Jim Henson differently. Placing the story of Mr. Henson`s death on the front page while placing Sammy Davis Jr.`s obituary in the obituary section was far from a racist or disrespectful act.
Mr. Davis had been ill for some time; both the press and his public knew that this fine actor`s life was nearing an end. His death was far from a surprise.
On the other hand, Mr. Henson`s death was unforeseen and warranted front- page status. Both were great men and I sincerely doubt that either would have thought that his greatness would be measured by the placement of his obituary.
